Mementos is Closing!!!

After 8 years of owning and operating Mementos, I have decided it is time for me to close my store and move on to my next big adventure . . . retirement!!! I am so thrilled to be able to have time for myself and most importantly, my family, especially my parents who live in Southern California. I will now be able to spend quality time with my folks and help them as they get older. Oh, and more time with my husband (whom I love dearly) and our new puppy Jax is another huge perk. I feel extremely blessed and fortunate to be able to retire at this time in my life.

I have enjoyed each and every minute spent at the store and have met some fabulous life-long friends (Cheri, Peggy, Jill, Michele and countless others!), and I am very thankful for that. I want to thank all of my valued customers who have contributed to my success over the years, your continued patronage has meant so much to me.

A New Year . . .

It is a New Year and with every New Year, we often find ourselves making resolutions or re-prioritizing our lives in some fashion. I was so fortunate to be able to spend some time with my parents over the holidays and cherished every minute with them. It also became crystal clear to me that my parents are aging, quickly. Even though they only live about 3 ½ hours away by car, I still don’t see them often enough. My heart told me that I must re-prioritize my life right away and carve out more time to spend with my parents, who mean everything to me. They need me, they are no longer able to do the many things I just assumed they would be able to do forever. So in order to be able to say “yes” to spending more time with them, I must say “no” to something in my life that will allow me to spend this much needed time with them.

My decision, although difficult and sad to come to terms with, is to not continue with the on-line store Jill Foster and I created together. Jill and I have discussed this decision together at great lengths and we both know in our hearts this is the right decision at this time. I had no idea when she and I started this venture just how much time it would consume from my daily life. Running the on-line store AND the physical store together allows me no spare time to spend not only with my parents, but my husband as well. And I kind a like him and he would love for me not to haul my laptop home every night and work! Jill continues to be busy as always designing for Penny Black and Faber Castell. She is also super busy at this time of the year, as our winter visitor’s clamor to sign up for her classes at our physical store location in Yuma, AZ. When she isn’t busy with all of the above, you will find her at the store, helping me out and doing what we do best together: LAUGH! No one makes me laugh as much as Jill does! It is business as usual for us at Mementos in Yuma. The only change will be to our on-line store.

Jill will continue to sell her much loved and coveted DVD’s directly from her web site at www.inspiredbystamping.blogspot.com. Stayed tuned to our blog (www.ilovemementos.blogspot.com) and Jill’s blog for more details on ordering her DVDs in the future. Gelato Inspiration

This week we'll be sharing some projects from the past (and some new projects, too!) to inspire you to get out your favorite Faber-Castell products and play! Let's begin with Gelatos....

Gelatos are creamy sticks infused with brilliant color. The color glides easily onto papers and can then be dissolved with water to create watercolor effects or left to dry for vibrant bursts of color. Try stamping with the Color Gelatos or apply a field of color and use a stamp to remove the color. Color Gelatos work wonderfully on flocked papers and embellishments too.

Gelatos can be used to create stunning backgrounds:

Here's how to create backgrounds like the one shown above-- Begin by coloring with various colors of Gelatos onto a smooth hard surface. (I used a piece of plastic.) Next, spray the surface with several mists of water. Dip white cardstock into mixture, repeating until you get a look you like. Allow to dry (you can speed up the process with a heat gun). Stamp with Penny Black Twinkling and add liquid pearls.

Gelatos can also be used to color directly onto cardstock, even dark cardstock. The metallic Gelatos have a beautiful shimmer when applied directly onto dark cardstock. Here's a Make and Take card where we did just this:

Gelatos also work great to accent stitching or piercing. Try using a white gelato on colored cardstock:

First, pierce holes from the back of red cardstock using the Tim Holtz Ruler-

Color with the white gelato over the holes and outer edge of cardstock. Blend with fingertip-

Happy Birthday!

To create this bright birthday card, begin by stamping the birthday cupcake two times with VersaFine Onyx Black Ink. Color the image using Stamper's Big Brush Markers. The intense india ink of these markers works GREAT with the bold print of the stamp. Color first with your lighter color (yellow) and then add your darker color (orange) for shading. Go back and lightly color over the top using the lighter color to blend. Cut out the frosting portion of cupcake and adhere on main image using pop dots. Pierce edges of cardstock using Tim Holtz ruler and then lightly ink with Old Paper Distress Ink. Ink notecard with Peeled Paint and Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Sentiment stamped and adhered using pop dots.

More Hero Arts!

These two cards combine a couple of Hero Arts sets, a fun stencil, and lots of Distress ink. The sentiments were inked with Old Paper and Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink. The birds were stamped using Fired Brick and Wild Honey Distress Ink and then cut using the coordinating die. To create the backgrounds, begin by inking white cardstock with Broken China Distress Ink. Then lay the stencil over the top and lightly apply Evergreen Bough Distress Ink (from the Christmas seasonal pack). The edges were pierced using the Tim Holtz Ruler and a thumb tack and then were lightly inked with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Coordinating Dies and Stamps

The flowers on this card were created by combining Hero Arts stamps and dies.

Begin by stamping your flowers using Distress Stains:

Next, place your metal die (ridge side down) directly over your image:

Run through your die cutting machine.

If you are using the Cuttlebug, your "sandwich" of plates will be (starting from the bottom)

A, B, paper, die (ridge side down), C.

To create the background on this card, ink Neenah Tiara White cardstock with Old Paper, Brushed Corduroy, and a very light layer Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Next, repeatedly stamp "I Miss You" sentiment using Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink. The hearts are from this same sentiment set and were inked with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and then colored with Copics. Adhere to flower centers with pop dots.

We just had to squeak in one more "blooming" card this week!

Flowers were stamped and colored with Copics and then paired with patterned paper from one of our favorite Studio Calico 6 x 6 paper pads. And don't you love that turquoise background? It's inked using one of the new Tim Holtz Seasonal Distress Ink colors, Evergreen Bough! This is such a nice addition to the Distress Ink line, even for non-Christmas cards. The notecard was inked with Fired Brick and Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Sentiment by Penny Black (Salutations).

It's the little things....

Today's set features the use of Spellbinders Nestabilities Flower Pot, Studio Calico Paper, and Penny Black stamps. The flowers were colored with Copic markers, the flower pot was distressed with Wild Honey, Rusty Hinge, and Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink. And the light colored backgrounds on both cards were inked with Old Paper Distress Ink.

Now lets take a look a a few of the little things that make these cards fun!

1. Flower Soft

Add a little Earth colored Flower Soft to the center of your flowers. Cover the center of your flower with Glossy Accents, sprinkle with Flower Soft, and then lightly pat with your finger tip.

2. Dimension

Add extra dimension to your flower pot by trimming off the top and inking the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Adhere the top of the pot using pop dots.

3. Go with the unexpected!

Do you spy the flower pot on the card above??? Yep, you found it! It's the banner! Use the smallest flower pot from the set and cut from patterned paper. Now you have the perfect die for a penant.

TWO cards and new Paper Packs

These elves from Penny Black are soooo fun to play with. And this week I have decided to combine them with some of my favorite holiday papers. On the above card, only the skin (Copic E31, E51, R20) and hair (Copic E35, E29) on the elf were colored. The rest of the image was paper pieced.

Here's how:

1. Stamp your image repeatedly onto various patterned papers. Also stamp one time onto Copic X-Press It Blending Cardstock and cut out.

2. Color the skin on the image using Copic Markers.

3. Cut out the sections of your image from the patterned papers and adhere them to the Copic-colored image.

*Helpful Hints*

I like to glue my pieces as I go so there is no confusion later on.

My favorite scissors for cutting are these:

Here's my favorite glue for adhering the small pieces.

I love that it does not have any bubbles once dry so your tiny pieces lay smooth.

And if you aren't a perfect trimmer (like me!) I recommend using this pen to fill in any gaps once you glue your pieces down:

LaBlanche Specialty Stamping Paper

Today we used this paper to create this fun map background:

How great is this background for a masculine card which can be so challenging to create...

Here's how:

1. Stamp image and color using Cut and Dry Foam Nibs (see yesterday's video to watch this technique in action- available HERE or scroll down to yesterday's post). Colors used on parrot: Fired Brick, Spiced Marmalade, Chipped Sapphire, Broken China.

2. Ink background with Broken China, Forest Moss, and Walnut Stain Distress Ink using the ink blending tool and foam applicator pad.

3. Dab this background (avoid the stamped image) with a baby wipe. Gather the baby wipe in your hand so you are only dabbing small areas at a time. The combination of Distress Inks, the LaBlanche Specialty Stamping Paper, and the wetness of the baby wipe will give a you a BEAUTIFUL look!

4. Randomly stamp over this background using the LaBlanche Map stamp using Walnut Stain ink.

Tutorial: Coloring Hair and Faces

Today we have a tutorial for you on coloring faces and hair. This is often intimidating, but just follow these easy steps and you will be ready to take on any image! Lets begin with faces....

Stamp your image with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink onto Copic X-Press It Blending cardstock. We will be doing all of our coloring today with Copic markers. Feather E31 from the sides of the face and a little bit along the hair (or hat) line:

Next color over the entire face with E51:

Add R20 to the edge of cheeks:

Lightly color over top of the R20 using E31:

Color over the entire image with E51:

Add E04 to lips and use a white gel pen for the eyes (don't forget this little step for the eyes, it makes a BIG difference):

Now lets color some hair. For sunny blond hair I like to use E35, YR23, and YR21.

Feather E35 along the top of the head and around the pig tails:

Feather YR23 over the E35, coloring further onto the head beyond the E35:

Color all of the hair with YR21:

If you would like darker hair use E31, E35, and E29. Begin with E29:

Then add E35:

Finish with E31:

(bow colored with B24, B26, and B29)

And remember, just have fun!! :)

It's so easy and I KNOW you all have cards at home that would be perfect to donate. Please read on for all the details . . . and THANK YOU from all of us at Mementos for taking part in this event!

Cards that Care is a national card drive collecting holiday cards for the elderly in nursing homes around the country. Join us in bringing a smile to the face of someone who may be feeling loneliness or sadness during the holiday season.
We want to make it easy for you, so all you need to do is bring your card to the store and we will make sure it gets sent to Jennifer and the Cards that Care folks. :)

IMPORTANT DETAILS

1. All cards brought to Mementos must be received by Thursday, November 24^th. Drop off as many cards as you like as often as you can!

2. Cards must be Christmas or Holiday Wishes.

3. Feel free to drop off handmade cards from anyone! (your children, church group, scout troups, etc.)

4. All cards need to have a message in it. Please sign your name and where you are from. On the card envelope, write your name on the top left corner. Do not seal the envelope. ENVELOPE REQUIRED FOR EACH CARD

Since we are FINALLY feeling a bit of fall weather here in Yuma, we thought it would be appropriate to make a beautiful fall card for our Make and Take this week (and by a bit of fall weather, we are talking around 90 degrees. Sigh.) We will be using a great die set from the Spellbinders Shapeabilities collection featuring assorted leaves. And let's not forget about our fav's Distress Inks and Stickles! This card is finished off with a nice sentiment from Northwoods. Here's a peek at the images from that great Spellbinders die we're using:

Perfect Combination...

The stamps from our Bundle of Savings deal (more info HERE) and our newest 6 x 6 patterned paper pads are the perfect combination. To complete each of these sets, simply choose a piece of patterned paper from the set that is light colored and/or has a subtle print. Stamp your image using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and color with Copic markers. (For the cards on the right I used Neenah Tiara White cardstock for the stamped portion.) These flowers would also look pretty with colored pencils, too. Add a bit of distressing with Brushed Cordoroy Distress Ink to your colored piece as well as some piercing with the Tim Holtz ruler. Layer onto patterned paper and you're done! (Oh, and on this first set, we've embossed and sanded a solid piece of patterned paper using THIS embossing folder.)

No matter what patterned paper pack you choose, you can follow these two sketches/card designs. Just pick out your papers and choose your colors for the flowers to match--your well coordinated card will come together right before your eyes. :)

All Stamps by Penny Black (Delicate Pattern and Dreams Come True)

Take Two

Today we're using this beautiful stamp from Penny Black, Clusters, to create two cards with completely different looks. This is definitely one of those beautiful AND versatile stamps (and don't forget, it's part of this week's Bundle of Savings deal, more info HERE):

On this first card, I stamped and embossed the image onto watercolor paper. Then I applied Walnut Stain, Crushed Olive, and Broken China Distress Ink to the paper, pressing the ink pad directly onto the paper and then filling in the small details with the ink blending tool and foam pad. Next, I sprayed the entire sheet heavily with water using the mini mister. This will blend all of those colors together. Once dry, I colored the inside of the petals using a white gel pen.

And to get a completely different look, I stamped the image using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and then colored it with Copics. Finally I distressed the background with Walnut Stain, Old Paper, and Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink.

Don't Scrap it, Wreath it!

Hi, it's Lisa here with a fun project just for you. Are you like me and have about a thousand scraps of beautiful papers that you just cannot part with? This project allows you to use up those bits of paper and turn them into a lovely, home decor item. Here's a picture of what you will be creating:

How awesome is this? I wanted to create something for the Fall (my favorite season!), so I used Fall colors for my wreath. You can easily use Christmas papers, birthday papers or whatever theme you want for your wreath.

What you will need to create this wreath is a straw wreath (I used an 18" wreath purchased at Michaels), at least 150 strips of 2" x 6" strips of paper cut down, folded in half and stapled and a glue gun. I divided up my stapled strips into color groups which allowed me to easily to choose the color I needed. The number of strips vary, it will depend on whether you want a very full look or a more sparse look. Or maybe it will depend on how much scrap paper you have! LOL!

Start gluing your strips down in a random pattern, paying attention to the color and designs of each strip. Keep working it all the way around the wreath, no need to glue the strips all the towards the inner and outer sides as they really won't be seen. And take care not to burn your fingers like I did with your glue gun. And your leg. Oh yeah, I'm a clutz!

This is great item to hang in your home, give as a gift (know any deserving teacher's who would love one of these for their classrooms?) or maybe donate to a retirement center. So . . . don't scrap it, wreath it!

Remember this background from Wednesday's video?

Here it is on a card:

We began by inking the stamped background with Brushed Corduroy and Walnut Stain Distress Ink. The tag was inked with Walnut Stain Distress Stain. The butterflies were inked with Fired Brick, Wild Honey, and Vintage Photo Distress Stain and then heavily spritzed with water. Sentiment stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and then distressed with Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink.

MegaMount Video Tutorial

Today we're using the MegaMount and awesome background stamps from Impression Obsession to create these backgrounds. All of the samples shown below begin completely as white cardstock. These stamps definitely make it easy to go from "white to wow!"

The possibilities are really endless with these stamps.
Here's how:
**Note- the Distress Ink colors used from the Tim Holtz Season Distress Ink set are called Ripe Persimmon (orange), Seedless Preserves (Purple), Gathered Twigs (brown). The Colorbox Chalk Ink colors used in the video are as follows: Ice Jade, Pink Pastel, and Blue Iris.**
